Something Old began as a way to represent the bride’s own family and past. It is a way to remember her mother, grandmother or even more distant relations. It is such a simple way of adding personal sentiment to your most special day. Wearing your grandmother’s locket, carrying her handkerchief. Maybe you go as far as wearing her dress, or add a piece of hers to yours. What about attaching her pearls to your bouquet?
Something New can be your dress, rings, jewelry etc. Something New represents success and the brides hope for a bright future. My mom bought each of her daughter’s new precious stone jewelry for our wedding days as a gift symbolizing the beginning of a new life together. It is something new to be treasured and possibly passed down someday as a Something Old.
Something Borrowed should come from someone special, but more importantly, a happily married woman as it symbolizes borrowing some of her happiness to carry into this new marriage.
Something Blue in ancient times was the symbol of faithfulness, purity and loyalty. We carry on the tradition in many different fun ways. Often times our hidden garter, blue toenail polish hidden in our shoes, blue shoes beneath our dress, or even a new tattoo are simple creative ways to have our Something Blue on our wedding day.
A Sixpence in her shoe is a piece of the poem that you may not remember. A sixpence is a British silver coin, and since in America we don’t have a sixpence, this part of the poem dropped off over the years. This piece of the tradition was to offer the promise of Joy, Happiness, and Good Fortune. A sixpence can be ordered online, or how about going to the bank and asking for a brand new shiny penny, let’s change the last line of the poem to, “A lucky penny in her shoe”!
